In the Philippines, we mainly have a meal using a spoon and a fork.
However, in Japan, it has a meal using chopsticks. If we go to Japan, an
opportunity to use chopsticks will increase. Japan is a country strict
with manners. There are some taboos also in how to use chopsticks. Let's
see some of taboos. Before that, let's open a small Japanese language lesson. Chopsticks are usually called "HASHI". However, "Hashi" will change to "BASHI", if other word is before "HASHI". *WARI-HASHI => WARIBASHI (half-split chopsticks) They are the chopsticks of throwing away currently used at the Japanese restaurant. *NURI-HASHI => NURIBASHI (lacquered chopsticks) All "HASHI" that will come out from now has changed to "BASHI". Japanese language lesson is over. |

The bad manners in the meal using chopsticks are called "KIRAI BASHI(Disagreeable Chopsticks) or "IMIBASHI(Taboo Chopsticks)". The worst one is called "HOTOKEBASHI"or "TATEBASHI(Standing Chopsticks)". In the case of the funeral of a Buddhism, when offering boiled rice to the dead's bedside. The chopsticks stood to this boiled rice are called "HOTOKEBASHI" or "TATEBASHI". The rice with "HOTOKEBASHI" is offered for the dead person. Therefore, it will be impolite to place before people and it will be disliked. |
||||
Another bad manners also originate in a Buddhistic funeral. It is called "AWASEBASHI", passing food from chopsticks to chopsticks. The dead body is cremated in Japan. The cremated bones are gathered and moved to a container by "AWASEBASHI". "HOTOKEBASHI" and "AWASEBASHI" are concerned with people's death, so Japanese are detest them. |
||||
"TSUKIBASHI"…(image: left), to pierce meat and vegetables with chopsticks, "SASHIBASHI" …, to point out people and a thing with chopsticks, "MAYOIBASHI" …, (image: right) to move above dishes which will be eaten. There are other and many bad manners. But if it cares too much, the taste of a delicious dish will not be clear anymore. So, only "HOTOKEBASHI", "AWASEBASHI" and "SASHIBASHI" are prohibition absolutely. |
